Today we headed off from our beautiful Tree Top accommodation and headed west on the back of 2 motorbikes driven by the same 2 guys that took us around to see the waterfalls and lake. According to a retired Belgian chemist who has been living in Cambodia for 7 years, we got a great price ($150US each for 3 days and 2 nights plus their return journey - we thought it was a little steep but couldn't find a better option) and these 2 guys are very trust worthy. The first guy is called 'Mr Happy' and the second guy is his cousin named Sapa ( Sophaorn - which means beautiful as in a picturesque landscape). Apparently MrHappy is called by many names and his cousin isn't sure what his real name is.
The first leg of our journey was to go back to Stung Treng. This place is described as a 'hellish backwater' in one trip advisor site and while I wouldn't go that far, there really isn't any real reason to go here unless you were passing through to somewhere else. It is the exit point from Cambodia to Laos, and also has a ferry to get you across the Mekong if you are travelling west as we were.
We crossed the Mekong and then continued on a dirt road all the way to Tbeng Meanchey. I think there were some sections of bitumen, however the last 40 klm was the worst with many potholes that launched us in the air when we were unlucky enough to hit on ( turned out that one of the rims on Sapa's bike cracked during our trip over and he had to have it wielded up the next day)
We stopped at a little village on the outskirts of Tbeng Meanchey to look at the boats being built for the water festival. They hold over 50people but I'm not sure how the work the single seat options.
After a long ride we made it to TM and found where we were staying which just happened to have a karaoke bar out the back which was entertaining people well past midnight.
