Arriving in Phenon Penh

Yesterday morning we landed in Phenom Penh. As we were coming into land we saw a lot of flooded lands on the edge of the city.  Someone at the airport said that they had recently had feet of rain not inches.  The city itself looked tidy and small for an Asian city from the air, and would have to be one of the cleanest Asian cities I've been to.  I was quite surprised by the relative lack of people and traffic.  It could be because of the local holiday or maybe it's not as densely populated as other Asian cities.

We took a tuk tuk from the airport as it wasn't raining.  it was slower than a cab so we got time to sit back and take it all in.  There didn't seem to be much pollution in the air either.  We got set up in our hotel and then wandered around the city.  The city has a Denpasar feel to it, with the dodgy footpaths and the way the shops are set up.  Maybe it is the temperature and humidity that create that connection for me. It is definitely cleaner, quieter and more spaciously laid out than Denpasar, and there are no dogs to have to avoid.

So far the people here are lovely.  Very friendly and welcoming even when they don't understand what you are saying.

We had dinner at Mother-in-law house 1 which offered us many local delights such as Penis Bull soup, fried penis with chili, a number of frog dishes, and beef and red ants.

Happy hour at the hotel offered 2 for 1 cocktails (US$3) which were so strong there was no need to try a second.

Here are some random photos from this fabulous city.
